The Vergilii's son, Richard Conacchio, age 13, is just one of over 55 students in the Wappingers Falls School District with Type 1 or Juveniles Diabetes.  

     With Type 1 Diabetes the body's own immune system attacks the pancreas and shuts down the natural production of insulin.  Without insulin the body can not process carbohydrates and sugar in the blood into usable energy resulting in fatally high blood glucose levels.  Extreme high glucose levels can permanently damage all the other organs of the body and extremely low glucose levels can easily result in coma and or death. 

     Rick and these children and some adults are alive today because of insulin injections and insulin pump therapy.  They prick there fingers and test their blood sugar levels every time they want to eat or drink.  This could add up to 5-10 times a day.  Try to imagine that at 13 years of age!  It is a difficult existence to say the least.
